Community Support for Decision-Making: Why CEOs Need It

You're a CEO: so making decisions is just part of the job, right?

Sometimes you spend weeks deliberating over big decisions, examining your strategy and team input and all available data for ages before making a call. And sometimes it's just a downpour of little decisions, busy days where you have to make choice after choice after choice.  With each pivotal moment you face, you believe deep down: these decisions, and their repercussions, are all on you.

Or are they?

Decision fatigue: a hidden burden

Have you ever felt stuck making decision after decision after decision? Who should we hire for that open role? Where should we host next quarter's team event? Do we need to reevaluate our marketing strategy? Who should take point on that new client? Pretty standard for business owners of all stripes, but this relentless demand can lead to decision fatigue, that braindead feeling you sink into at the end of a long day that makes you stare blankly at your spouse when they ask what show you want to watch. Unsurprisingly, that's not a good place to end up as a human in general - and as a business leader in particular.

As decision fatigue sets in more chronically, the ability to weigh options, consider long-term consequences, and maintain strategic focus diminishes. Suddenly you're stressed, you're burned out, and you're not too confident in the quality of the decisions you're making. So what are you supposed to do about it?

Need a fresh perspective? Try a peer team.

No matter what messages you may be receiving from the world, you're not meant to be a lone wolf. We were created to exist in community, and that reality should impact how we approach decision-making.

So, need to shake yourself out of decision-making fatigue? Find your people. Not to ask them to solve your problems for you, but to get some perspectives, take a breath, and remember it's not all on you. One of the best places to find a community like that, in our humble opinion, is in a peer group or peer team. Peer teams, like the ones we offer, provide CEOs with a platform to connect with other experienced leaders who understand the unique challenges they face. These groups offer a safe space to discuss issues, share experiences, and gain new insights.

Engaging with a peer team allows CEOs to step outside their usual environment and consider alternative viewpoints. By digging deep and discussing issues openly together, we can illuminate blind spots, challenge assumptions, and inspire innovative solutions.

Good decision-making requires diverse insights.

One key strength of peer teams? Members come from various industries, backgrounds, and experiences, bringing a wealth of knowledge to the table. It's a diversity of thought that's invaluable when making critical decisions, as it provides a broader range of insights and potential solutions.

When...

  • your pal who's run a tech firm for 20 years
  • AND the COO across the table who learned some hard lessons when he dealt with the exact same problem you're describing at his company
  • AND that lawn care business owner who always surprises you with deep insights

....are all advising you in one space, bouncing ideas off each other while you process your situation out loud in their presence? You're going to anticipate challenges, identify opportunities, and make informed decisions like never before.

Humans need community.

What's more - do we even need to spell it out? - you're a human. As a human, you're going to be able to face life (and business leadership) with more balance, more confidence, and more health if you've got a community that has your back.  Knowing that you have a network of trusted peers to turn to can alleviate the isolation and pressure that often accompany leadership roles. Knowing there are others out there that "get it" keeps you feeling strong and supported throughout the highs and lows. And an environment of collaboration, mutual understanding, and encouragement will do more than just enhance your decision-making.

So what's next?

Investing in a peer team membership is a strategic move for any CEO looking to enhance their decision-making capabilities, overall leadership effectiveness, and growth outside the office. Interested in learning more? We'd love to dive in.
